On-Board Fire Suppression PDF Print E-mail

Flaming Hot is -not- the way you want to cross a finish line. You may have taken all the precautions necessary, inspected all lines and fittings, electrical, fluid and mechanical, but the gremlins might still get you. Some failures can not be predicted; some cracks, holes or other insidious things leading to a failure can not always be found.

This is why you need an on-board fire suppression system. When you see fire it's time to hit the brakes (if you have them) and fire the bottle. Not just a simple 5 lb. extinguisher within arms reach, an on-board system is a suitable size fire bottle mounted in the engine compartment of your Pantera. It can be a simple one-nozzle bottle or be plumbed to multiple nozzles (recommended) in order to maximize the suppression capability.

Hit the button, or pull the handle, various methods of actuation are available. The bottle empties into your engine compartment giving you valuable time to stop and exit the car. No Pantera owner ever wants to see their car go up in flames, but more to the point, we all want to get out of the car alive. Give yourself some added insurance, give yourself those extra few seconds to get out, consider an on-board fire suppression system.

Various kits and sizes are available from most race product vendors. You can get foam, Halon or the new FE-36 which is being required by some race sanctioning bodies. Here are a couple of example systems:

Prices vary depending on the size of bottle, usually 5 lb. versus 10 lb.

NOTE: Please consult specific rules and regulations regarding the race events you wish to participate in. Remember, safety is -your- responsibility. When in doubt, consult your local racing body or auto professional.
